If you’re moving your site onto my hosting (Concierge Cloud), the migration is done for you. All I really need is access, and then I handle the rest. Here’s how it goes, so you know what to expect.

What I Need From You

You don’t need to sign up for anything new. Concierge Cloud is included in your plan.

How The Move Works

  1. I copy your site onto my servers and set it up there: caching, security, backups, email delivery and so on.
  2. I test it on a temporary address before anything changes for your visitors.
  3. I set up your DNS in Cloudflare, carrying over all your existing records (including your email’s), so nothing breaks when we switch.
  4. The switch. Your domain gets pointed at the new server. Your visitors shouldn’t notice a thing.
  5. I check everything again on the live address: pages, forms, checkout, logins, email.

Please Hold Off On Changes During The Move

Once I start copying your site, anything you change on the OLD site may not come along. New posts, edits, settings, even orders and sign-ups on a busy site. So when I tell you the move is starting, please hold off on making changes until I tell you it’s done. It’s usually a short window, and I’ll keep you posted.

If something has to change during that time (it happens), just tell me and I’ll make sure it ends up on the new site.

When To Cancel Your Old Host

Wait until I confirm the move is complete and everything is working. Then give it about a week, just as a safety net. After that, cancel your old hosting yourself. It’s your account, so I can’t cancel it for you.

Before you cancel, a couple of things to check:

  • Is your email hosted there? Some hosts include mailboxes. If yours does, those need to move first, or they’ll disappear when you cancel. See Your Business Email Inbox.
  • Is your domain registered there? If your old host is also your registrar, cancelling hosting doesn’t have to cancel the domain. Just make sure you only cancel the hosting part.
  • Want a final copy? Download a backup from your old host before you close the account, if they offer one. Belt and suspenders. I’ll have my own backups of your site from day one anyway.

Questions During The Move

Ask anytime in Basecamp. Moving a site is routine for me, but it’s not routine for you… and I’d much rather answer a question than have you wondering.
